How to choose a coarse water filter?

The coarse water filter allows you to get rid of it, including rust, scale, appearing from the wear of pipelines

The water that enters the apartments and private households of citizens through a centralized communication system rarely meets the current sanitary and hygienic requirements.

In addition to the fact that water often contains dissolved chemicals that are quite harmful to the human body, it also contains suspensions of insoluble particles. To cope with this problem, you can use a special filter that performs coarse cleaning.

What is a coarse filter for?

In order to decide which coarse water filter to choose, you need to understand what it is for.

Owners of private households, especially those receiving water from wells and other natural reservoirs, must purchase a filter without fail. Drinking water from a natural source contains dirt, clay, organic matter and other inclusions.

Residents of apartments often doubt the advisability of installing a coarse filter, citing the fact that water already goes through a multi-stage purification system, water treatment before it is supplied to the end consumer. It is worth considering that the condition of most utility networks is not the best, and along with water, rust, scale, and limestone get into the tap. And you can get rid of these inclusions only with the help of a high-quality main filter and other types of filtration.

Small insoluble inclusions lead to early wear of water meters, seals, water taps and other important parts of the plumbing system. In addition, the use of untreated water leads to early breakdowns of complex household appliances, such as washing machines, domestic water heaters, etc.

How the filter works

The principle of operation of the cleaning filter is quite simple. Ordinary tap water passes through a special metal mesh with small cells or other similar structure that traps solid insoluble particles. Having passed such a filtration, the water can be transferred to the points of water intake or transferred to fine purification.

Varieties of coarse filters

When choosing a filter, you should decide on its type. With a similar principle of operation, cleaning filters may differ in shape, method of connection to the water supply network, filter element, and the possibility of cleaning from dirt residues.

Mesh filters for coarse cleaning use a fine-mesh mesh, most often made of stainless steel, as a filter element. A feature of this filter is the possibility of long-term operation without frequent replacement of the filter element. The difference between individual models of mesh filters lies in several indicators.

By type of connection to the water supply

There are two main types of filters - sleeve and flange.

When connecting a cleaning filter to a wide water pipe (from two inches), a flange is installed.

Most often, it is mounted in the main water supply, if necessary, to provide a supply of purified water to a multi-storey building. Features of the installation allow the installation and dismantling of the flanged filter without affecting other parts of the plumbing system.

With a small pipe diameter, a sleeve filter is used.

The question of what type of coarse water filter to install is decided at the design stage of the water supply system.

According to the location of the settling tank for filtration

Each treatment device has two nozzles (inlet and outlet) and a sump. According to the way this tank is located, the filters are divided into straight and oblique.

In the first type, the sump is perpendicular to the water flow. The large dimensions of the tank provide high quality filtration. In the second type, the sump is located at a slight angle. The second type is used much less often and is installed when it is impossible to install a direct filter. For example, if there is a lack of free space when placing a water pipe near the floor.

Type of dirt removal

This indicator provides two types of filters:

  • "Muds". When cleaning the filter from blockages and during periodic maintenance, it is necessary to disassemble the entire device. This group includes all oblique type filters, as well as some models of straight lines.
  • Filters equipped with a special dirt cleaning system. The collected sediment is drained through a special outlet valve, the device itself is cleaned using a direct or reverse jet of water.

Coarse cartridge filters

Private homeowners sometimes choose a cartridge-type pre-filter. A special design with a large flask made of a suitable material is mounted on the wall. The flask can be either transparent or opaque. Inside the flask are placed replaceable elements that purify the water.

The replacement cartridge is made from pressed polypropylene, polyester or a special twisted thread. The possibility of flushing replaceable elements is excluded, as they are clogged or contaminated, they must be replaced.

Some models of cartridge filters use a metal mesh as a cleaning element. Such cartridges are serviced when clogged, the mesh can be cleaned and replaced.

Coarse cartridge filters can be installed both as an independent purification system for removing harmful impurities and suspensions from water, or as part of a general purification system, in parallel with other filters.

Selecting a filter by cost

The main indicator for many buyers that affects how to choose a coarse water filter is the cost of the device. The final price of treatment equipment depends on many conditions, including:

  • Manufacturer.
  • Filter type.
  • The material from which the selected unit is made.

And many others. If you purchase a cleaning filter at a price significantly lower than the market average, this entails certain risks. For example, you run the risk of purchasing and installing a filter of inadequate quality, which will crack already during the installation process.

You should not save too much on purchasing a water purification filter, as clean water is the basis of health. However, do not chase the most expensive models on the market: even a very high price is not always a guarantee of perfect quality.

Coarse filter manufacturers

Among the models of filters for coarse water purification presented on the domestic market, there are representatives of a different price range and quality. In recent years, the products of the Italian-Russian company Valtec have been gaining popularity. The company develops filters for coarse purification of hot and cold water. Depending on the specific work, the maximum operating temperature of such filters can reach 110-150 degrees. The filters have a reliable bronze or brass body and a high-quality stainless steel mesh as the main cleaning element. According to the manufacturer, the service life of the product according to the standard reaches 30 years.

The German company Honeywell develops filters equipped with a built-in direct flush system. If necessary, the filter can be disassembled and washed with a directed stream of water. Also included is a pressure reducer. The cost of Honeywell filters is much higher than the Italian-Russian counterpart and can reach 2000 rubles and more.

It is necessary to select and install a primary filter even before installing the meter. Due to limited space, many owners install an oblique filter that protects the meter from possible damage and ingress of large solid particles.

An oblique filter is installed on a horizontal or vertical pipe - the main thing is that the water flow is directed from top to bottom. In order to facilitate subsequent maintenance, the flask should point down. The direct type filter is installed on a horizontal pipe, and it is necessary to leave free space for removing the flask.

Due to the insufficient quality of tap water in most settlements, coarse filtration is not always sufficient for high-quality cleaning. It is better to install it as part of a general system, as a result of which the user receives purified drinking water. However, even in the absence of a multi-stage purification system, such a filter protects against many harmful impurities.
