Treasure Island main characters and a short description. One-legged pirate from "Treasure Island": name, character description, role in the work. Island Adventure

Robert Stevenson described the pirates of the 18th century very plausibly. This is a spiteful, stupid and drunken rabble, devoid of any organization.

Silver, Flint, Billy Bones and Blind Pew are, of course, fictional characters, but they have a lot in common with the people who actually existed. Even some of the facts mentioned in the book took place in reality.

Collective image

The famous dialogue at the barrel of apples, from which Jim Hawkins learns that a conspiracy is brewing on the ship, is literally packed with references to real events.

“I was amputated by a scientist-surgeon - he went to college and knew all Latin by heart. And yet he did not get away from the gallows - he was hauled up in Corso Castle, like a dog, to dry in the sun ... next to others. Yes! They were Roberts' men, and they died because they changed the names of their ships. "

John Silver will persuade the famous captain Bart Roberts, who terrorized the seas of the New World and Africa for several years. Black Bart himself died in the battle, but the pirates from his team were actually hanged in the fortress of Corso Castle.

As for the name of the ships, changing it was really considered a bad omen, and not only among superstitious pirates, but even in the English fleet. A little later in the same dialogue, Silver will mention Howell Davis, the same one after whose death Roberts became the captain of the ship "Rover" and began his "career".

In general, there are a lot of such references in the text of the novel. Blind Pew will say that he lost his sight in the battles for King George. The surviving pirates returning to land often referred to themselves as former sailors of the Royal Navy.

Silver, dreaming of wealth, will mention that he wants to be a lord and ride a carriage. This is quite consistent with the pirates' idea of a rich life. Everyone who has money, of course, is a member of parliament and only does what he drives around in a carriage.

However, the main thing, of course, is the collective image of the pirate. A completely wild, very angry, moreover, a man armed to the teeth, who is ready at the first opportunity to dig into the throat of his own comrade - this is what a real pirate is. They have been walking the seas for many years, but they do not know how to manage it at all. Silver does not want to kill Captain Smollett and the others at once, because he knows for sure that without them he will not get to England, to the neighboring island. And the pirates, of course, camp in the middle of the swamp. Because their heads are not burdened with any unnecessary knowledge. Like the fact that insects dangerous to health and life are found in swamps.

Captain Flint

Blackbeard is Flint's prototype. (pinterest.com)

The prototype of the fictional Flint is considered to be Blackbeard. We are about Blackbeard. He was not a devil in the flesh and a fiend of hell, he was a man who loved to instill fear in others. This is exactly how Flint appears before us, with all the abundance of creepy stories that are told about him. Most of all, Blackbeard was feared by his own people. In the same way, even the pirates who went with him on the Walrus are afraid of Flint's name.

Flint and Edward Teach are related and another character is Israel Hands. In the book, he is the second boatswain, who, according to Abraham Gray, was Flint's gunner. This seems to be the only case when a real person appears among the characters. Hands was in Teach's crew and was either a navigator or a boatswain there. When Blackbeard died in the skirmish at Ocracok Island, Hands was not with him. Shortly before that story, Teach shot his officer in the knee while drinking. There was no compelling reason for such cruelty. Teach explained his act by the need to maintain discipline on board. The mutilated Hands settled in Carolina, escaped death and even the gallows. In Treasure Island, he is killed by Jim Hawkins. At the same time, in the novel, Hands appears as the most unpleasant and disgusting of pirates - cruel, arrogant and treacherous. At the same time, he knows how to handle the ship, which for a pirate without the necessary education is already an achievement.

Billy Bones

Bones is a bit of an atypical pirate. Just a little. He, just like any other sea robber, abuses rum and grabs the knife on the first occasion, but there are important differences in his image.

First, he is a navigator. And this naval position requires special skills and knowledge that you can't get anywhere. Anyone can be a Boatswain and Quartermaster, a cannoneer just needs to be able to handle cannons, and this skill can be learned in practice. Doctors and navigators were worth their weight in gold on pirate ships. People trained in medicine and navigation. The calculation of the course assumes knowledge of the starry sky, the ability to use complex devices to determine the height of bodies, as well as an understanding of the basics of mathematics and geometry. For understanding: many pirates did not know where is north and where is south, most did not know how to read and write.

Bons has no problem with that. He is not only educated (albeit minimally), he also has a habit of writing down for himself. Its likely prototype could be a certain Blaise Kennedy, who was the navigator for Captain Edward England, and then escaped from him.

John Silver

Silver with Jim. (pinterest.com)

Silver is distinguished from all other pirates by enterprise and charm. He does not drink his share, like Blind Pew or Ben Gunn, but tries to put it into business. He has his own tavern and a wife with savings. To put it bluntly, such thrifty and enterprising people were not liked among pirates. The idea to drink everything at once came not so much from savagery as from the thought that sooner or later they would hang you anyway. It's a shame to dangle in a noose when your pockets are full of money.

In fact, in the middle of the 18th century, the situation was just like that. Almost all pirates ended their lives on the gallows, some were lucky to fall in battle. English laws of those times did not allow pirates not only to spend the loot other than in taverns, but also to return to a peaceful life. The time for amnesties had already passed by that moment.

Silver with his "Spyglass" and the old woman who waits at the appointed place is undoubtedly different from the gray mass. He looks like pirates in a completely different way. First, for all his intelligence, he is still stupid. He chooses the right strategy for himself, but wrong for the common cause. Dr. Livesey will deceive him by exchanging a card for a ship, and Silver will not suspect a trick. A typical trait of the 18th century sea robber is self-confidence based on empty space. Overconfidence and lack of critical thinking.

Silver is brutally cruel, as can be seen in the last chapter. Jim experienced it himself at the moment when Silver thought he was about to find the treasure. The treasures were not there, the old pirate needed Jim again, and he again stood up to his defense. But to finish off a dying comrade who doubted his authority with a shot is quite a pirate's trait. And Silver does just that.

Finally, there are external attributes. A wooden leg, a parrot, nautical words - all this is in the piggy bank of the classic image of a pirate. You can also supplement it with the nickname Silver. He is, if you have forgotten, "Ham". The origin of the nickname is nowhere explained, it seems to be a matter of skin color. Over the years of wandering in the tropics and subtropics, it has become weathered, coarse and brownish, just like a chicken roasted over an open fire.

Plot

The events of the novel take place around the middle of the 18th century (at the beginning of the book, Livesey mentions his participation in the historical battle of Fontenoy, which took place on May 11, 1745, in the diary of Billy Bons there is a date on June 12, 1745, events take place from February to September, on the map Islands affixed July 1754). They begin in the south-west of England, near the city of Bristol, in the Admiral Benbow Inn, in 1765.

Once a new guest settles in the tavern - the former sailor Billy Bones. The guest has a gloomy and unsociable character, moreover, he is burdened by chronic alcoholism. After a while, strange guests begin to come to him. The first is a pirate named Black Dog, an old friend of Billy's. They fight, Bones wounds Black Dog, but he flees. Billy is then visited by the terrible blind beggar pirate Pew, who gives him black mark- a formidable warning to those who violate the interests of the team. Billy, having received the mark, decides to urgently leave the inn, but suddenly dies of an apoplectic stroke. Jim and his mother, whom Billy owes money for the stay, search the dead sailor and his belongings. At the bottom of his chest, they find money and a packet of papers. From these papers, it becomes clear that Bones was the first mate on the ship of the famous Captain Flint and owned a map of the island where Flint buried his treasures.

Jim barely has time to take Flint's papers from under the noses of the blind Pew and his pirates, who at night attack the Admiral Benbow inn in order to take possession of the map. Bones, Black Dog, Blind Pew and the rest are former members of the Walrus crew, Captain Flint's pirate ship. Suddenly, a detachment of royal customs officers comes to the aid of Jim and his mother. Blind Pew accidentally dies under the hooves of a horse, and the rest of the pirates flee - their escape is covered by the crew of a pirate lugger, on which their accomplices are.

Jim goes to see Dr. Livesey and Squire Trelawney and shows them the papers and documents. The wealthy Trelawney begins preparing the voyage and instructs the businessman Blendley to equip a suitable ship for the voyage - the schooner Hispaniola.

The captain of the "Hispaniola" Mr. Smollett expresses great doubts about the reliability of the team, and in particular does not trust his assistant - navigator Arrow, but yields to the persuasion of Dr. Livesey and Trelawney's condescension. The Hispaniola starts sailing from Bristol to Treasure Island. During the voyage, navigator Arrow drank a lot and one rainy night disappears from the ship, in addition, Jim manages to overhear a secret conversation between sailor Dick, the "second" boatswain Israel Hands and cook, one-legged John Silver, nicknamed Barbecue, he same Lanky John. It turns out that the team that Trelawney has hired consists mostly of Flint's former team, and Silver is the captain of the conspirators, whose goal is to seize the treasure. Jim learns that there are significantly more pirates on the ship than honest people. He hears that Silver and his pirates are going to kill all honest people. The pirates press on Silver and urge him to quickly attack Captain Smollett and the others, but Silver realizes that the gang will not be able to plot a course on their own, since none of the pirates has the appropriate education. Silver's plan is to wait for the squire, the captain, the doctor and others to find the treasures and load them onto the ship, wait for the experienced captain Smolett to bring the ship "at least to the trade winds" and only then kill all the goodies.

Meanwhile, the ship is sailing to Treasure Island. Silver sees his plan start to collapse. The pirates practically openly ignore the orders of Captain Smollett and behave quite aggressively. Jim tells the captain, squire and doctor what he heard. The heroes understand that they are in trouble. Smollett decides to defuse the atmosphere and invites the team to go ashore. The captain's plan is to surprise the pirates left on the ship, attack them and capture the Hispaniola. The captain's plan would have worked if Jim had not sailed in one of the boats with the pirates. Therefore, the captain proposes a new plan. On the map, he sees that there is an old Flint fort on the island. The captain offers to move to the fort and fight pirates on the island. The heroes collect gunpowder, weapons, food, sit in a skiff and sail away from the ship. The pirates, taken by surprise by these actions, prepare to fire on the skiff. The skiff contains the captain, doctor, squire, Hunter, Joyce, Redrut and Abraham Gray - a sailor from the crew whom the pirates wanted, but could not win over to their side. Hands tries to sink the skiff by firing a cannon at it. The squire kills one of the pirates. Soon the heroes, having lost the servant of Tom Redruth, who died in battle, get to the fort and settle in it. The captain distributes each position. The heroes are ready for long battles.

Meanwhile, Jim reaches the coast with the pirates and escapes. After a while, he witnesses the murder of an honest sailor Tom by John Silver. By the wild cry it becomes clear that another honest sailor Alan was also killed by pirates. Jim runs without making out the road, and meets a man dressed in goat skins and behaving very strangely. The man reports that he is a repentant ex-pirate named Ben Gunn. Ben asks Jim to arrange a meeting with the doctor. Jim sees the British flag flying and rushes to his friends.

The next day, Silver comes to the fort with a white flag. Captain Smollett comes out to negotiate. Silver offers to give him the card in exchange for the fact that the pirates will leave people alone and send them the first oncoming ship to rescue them. Smollett brutally refuses Silver and warns that all negotiations are over. Captain Silver leaves, promising that in an hour they will launch an attack. The pirates attacked the fort. A firefight began. The pirates climbed over the palisade. It came to hand-to-hand combat. As a result, the pirates had to retreat, many of them were killed. There were also casualties among the defenders of the fort - Hunter and Joyce were killed, Captain Smollett received two gunshot wounds.

Jim gives the doctor Ben Gunn's request. The doctor takes pistols, a dagger, puts a map in his pocket, hangs a musket on his shoulder and leaves. Unable to withstand being in the fort, Jim takes a supply of crackers, two pistols, a knife and makes a sortie. He comes ashore and decides to see what happens on the Hispaniola. Jim finds Ben Gunn's shuttle and, waiting for low tide, swims to the ship. Jim reaches the ship and realizes that the boatswain Hands and the Irishman O'Brien, who are left to guard the ship, are drunk. He cuts the anchor line and climbs aboard. In the morning, he finds Hands wounded and O'Brien killed. Under Hands' leadership, Jim leads the ship to the Northern Anchorage, now no one knows about the ship's whereabouts. Hands tries to kill Jim, but Jim accidentally shoots him with his pistols. Hands falls into the water and drowns.

Jim returns to the fort, but finds pirates there and becomes a hostage. Silver refuses to kill Jim, explaining to the pirates that they cannot kill the hostage. Silver's behavior, clearly playing a double game, angered the pirates. Silver is handed a "black mark" and demand re-election of the captain. However, Silver explains his behavior. He made an agreement with Captain Smollett: in exchange for a map, food supplies and a fort, the pirates let the heroes leave. Nobody can understand why it was necessary. Silver remains the leader, his authority only grows.

The next day, Dr. Livesey comes to visit. He examines and treats pirates with fever and asks Silver to speak with Jim. Silver lets Jim go to talk to the doctor, taking his word of honor that he will not run away. The doctor persuades Jim to run, but he refuses. Jim tells the doctor where the ship is hidden.

The pirates, taking Jim with them, go to look for treasure. They soon stumble upon a skeleton. Silver realizes that this compass is one of Flint's quips. Suddenly, the pirates hear Flint's voice. Terrified, they stop. Silver convinces everyone that this is the voice of a living person, since everyone heard the echo. The pirates soon recognize Ben Gunn's voice. The pirates continue on their way and find a huge pit. It becomes clear that the treasure has already been found, and it is for this reason that the doctor gave the map. They are about to attack Silver and Jim, but Dr. Livesey, Abraham Gray and Ben Gunn ambush the pirates and kill the bandaged pirate Dirk. George Mary is shot by Silver, and the rest of them flee.

It turned out that Gann had found the treasure long ago and transferred them to his cave. For several days, the heroes dragged the treasure onto the ship. They soon sailed off the island, leaving behind the three remaining pirates. Silver manages to disappear into one of the ports, taking some of the treasures. Ben Gunn helped to do this, as he was mortally afraid of him.

Back in England, the heroes became rich people. Only Ben Gunn squandered all his treasures in a few days. Trelawney took him to work as a gatekeeper in the park.

Characters (edit)

Main characters

  • Jim Hawkins(eng. Jim Hawkins) - a boy, a cabin boy in Hispaniola, the main character, on whose behalf (with the exception of several chapters on behalf of Dr. Livesey) the story is told. It is his actions that spin the plot of Stevenson's novel. Jim Hawkins is actively involved in all events: it was he who made friends with the pirate Billy Bons, stole the Treasure Island map from this pirate's chest, which he gave it to Dr. Livesey and Squire Trelawney; he discovered a conspiracy on the ship, found Ben Gunn, killed Israel Hands, took the pirate ship to the North Parking lot, and became a bone of contention in the confrontation between John Silver and the remnants of his gang.
  • Billy Bones(English Billy Bones) - a former pirate, was the navigator on Flint's ship. After the death of Captain Flint, he obtained a map of Treasure Island and fled to England, thereby becoming a target for the rest of the pirates. Billy Bones 'appearance at the Admiral Benbow Inn actually marked the beginning of all Jim Hawkins' adventures. Billy drank a lot and had a very nasty and domineering character. In the tavern they called him "the captain". He swore, ordered to drink with him and listen to terrible stories about pirates and their crimes. Billy was afraid of publicity and authorities. Therefore, Dr. Livesey quickly put him in his place, threatening with bailiffs. Bones lived in constant fear of his former comrades, who eventually found him and brought him with a black mark to a stroke, from which Bones died, thus bringing so much anxiety and enormous wealth to the heroes of the book. The story of Billy Bons is described in detail by Stephen Roberts in the novel “Piastres. Piastres !!! "
  • Dr. David Livesey(eng. Dr. David Livesey) - a gentleman, doctor and judge, a man of amazing courage, ready to fulfill his professional and human duty without hesitation. He once served in the army of the Duke of Cumberland and was wounded at the Battle of Fontenoy (1745). Due to the injury of Captain Smollett, he became the leader of a detachment of honest people. After the voyage, he left with his sister for Tonten.
  • Squire John Trelawney(English Squire John Trelawney) - a wealthy, flighty, frivolous landowner who financed the voyage for Flint's treasures. Height over six feet (183 cm). Initially claimed leadership; however, his talkativeness and incompetence caused the majority of the Hispaniola's crew to be the late Flint's bandits. He ceded the right of command to Captain Smollett when he learned of the impending riot. Excellent shooter. He took on the voyage three disciplined and loyal servants who showed themselves well in battles with robbers. After the voyage, he became a member of parliament in his district and still hunted for partridges and shot them with his usual accuracy, until he died of his last illness.
  • Captain Alexander Smollett(English Captain Alexander Smollett) - courageous, honest captain of the Hispaniola. A professional sailor who has knowledge not only in navigation, but also in the organization of ship life. A dry and demanding man, he organized the escape from the ship and the defense of the fort. Bad shooter. During the battle for the fort, he perfectly positioned the people, received two gunshot wounds from the boatswain Job Anderson and the pirate George Mary. Height over six feet (183 cm). After returning to England, he left the naval service. Was recalled by the war to serve, participated in the glorious battle of Admiral Rodney against the French at the All Saints Islands in 1782. The French squadron was defeated and the West Indies were rescued, but the captain died - a cannonball hit him in the chest.

In 2001, Irish writer Frank Delaney (under the pseudonym Francis Bryan) wrote a sequel novel Jim Hawkins and the Curse of Treasure Island (English) Russian».

Dennis Jude wrote the novel The Adventures of Lanky John Silver about Silver's life before the events of Treasure Island.

In 2013, the Russian writer V. Tochinov released an "investigation" novel "An Island Without Treasures", in which he proves that the apparent plot inconsistencies of the novel turn out to be subtly thought-out plot moves, behind which the real faces of the heroes are hidden. In particular, Jim Hawkins' parents were engaged in smuggling, the proceeds of which received Squire Trelawney, Dr. Livesey was a spy

Interesting facts and bloopers

After the performance of the song "Money is rubbish" one can hear the cry "Eh, go, one-eyed!", And the voice clearly belongs to the Black Dog. However, at the moment when the cry is heard, the Black Dog's mouth is occupied by an orange that has fallen into it. It is also unclear to whom the exclamation is addressed - Pew was not one-eyed, but blind (but it is still possible that the exclamation was addressed to Billy Bons, who was standing at the window, who was one-eyed in the cartoon or, as a comic effect, to Billy Bones's one-eyed cat).

At the end of the song about the boy Bobby, the handle is on the left side of the barrel organ, although throughout the song it was on the right.

During the arrival of the Blind Pew at the inn, it is noticeable that when Pew hands out the black mark to Billy Bons, he does not have a glove on one hand, while before and after the gloves were on both hands.

According to some assumptions, pirates do not drink "Rum", but a drink with a mysterious name "Rom" because the English spelling of the word "rum" was poorly known in the USSR at that time. According to other assumptions, this is a special joke by the creators of the cartoon by analogy with the spellings "Protokol" and "Prigovor" in the cartoon "African Tale" by Leonid Aristov and "Podvodnaya Lodca" in "The Adventures of Captain Vrungel" by the same David Cherkassky.

Returning to the fort, which has already been given to the pirates, Jim Hawkins says: "It was I who killed Israel Hands! .." Despite this, at the end of the cartoon "Hispaniola" is shown sailing away from the treasure island, between the masts of which the living Israel Hands still hangs, holding the ends of the rope, which was cut by his own dagger. There is a discrepancy because the characters speak exactly according to the book text, sometimes contrary to what is happening on the screen.
When the heroes, while still on the schooner, learned about the conspiracy, Captain Smollett, in response to Trelawney's question "How many people are loyal to us?", Says: "There are seven of us, along with Jim", which corresponds to the plot of the book. Nevertheless, after the defense of the fort, he also says: “There were four of us against nineteen. Now there are four of us against nine! ”, Which corresponds to the plot of the cartoon, not the book. In the film, the number of pirates cannot be counted, while there are only four goodies: Ben Gunn joined them later.

Dr. Livesey brings a piece of cheese to a date with Ben Gunn, and Jim promises Ben "this is such a head", although he does not ask for cheese, unlike the book.

During the defense of the fort in front of Trelawny, a real window is initially visible. Then it magically turns into a landscape painting, which Trelawney unsuccessfully tries to knock out with the butt of a gun (when he realized that it was a painting, and out of anger hit the wall where it hung, the wall fell to the ground with poor Smollett). This is undoubtedly a planned gag.

Silver has no right leg in most shots. However, when at the end of the first episode the pirates gather for a gathering, and Silver sits on the barrel, he no longer has his left leg. This episode, like Jimmy's visit to Squire Trelawney, was filmed using the transfer technique, which is no longer observed in the film (except for the scenes at the Hispaniola's ladder with Trelawney and Smollett: “Just look at our beauty! ... Everything, literally everything , as soon as we found out that we were going for treasures ... "). He also does not have his left leg at the moment when the pirates, in search of Jim on the island, enter one after another into the thicket of the forest, and also when he approaches the fort with a white flag (view from the side of the fort).

During an overheard meeting of pirates aboard the Hispaniola, overheard by Jim, Silver says, "Hands, your head is very inexpensive because it never had a brain." At the same time, he refers to a sailor in a fez, with a mustache and an imposing beard (by the way, very similar to the bearded man who scribbled from a bomb thrower). If this is the same Israel Hands, who at the end of the second episode hangs between the masts, then his appearance is very different a little later, when Silver instructs him to "keep his eyes on the captain." He may have shaved, but most likely it's just a blooper.

Billy Bons has a bandaged left hand, then right.
Many of the drawing sequences have been used multiple times. For example, the night pirate raid on the inn "Admiral Benbow" and the day attack of the fort.

When Jim and the pirates approach the treasure pit, Captain Smollett, Dr. Livesey, Squire Trelawney and Ben Gunn are already waiting in ambush. But when the doctor, noticing Jim, asks the others: "Is it Jim?"

Livesey, during the shelling of the Hispaniola fort, says: “The log house is not visible from the ship. They are aiming at our flag! ”, Although he himself saw (through a telescope) the fort from the ship and then initiated an escape to the island. It is possible, however, that the pirate ship has moved somewhat during this time.
As Livesey and Smollett load supplies to escape the Hispaniola, the boat sags under the weight of every barrel and crate. She does this, however, not at the moment when the load is in the hands of Smollett, but at the moment when he carefully enough puts the load on the bottom of the boat.

When pirates impatiently jump into a dug hole with treasures that do not exist there, then - in slow motion - you can see that Silver is jumping along with all the pirates. However, Silver approaches the pit a little later.
Despite the fact that in the biography of Silver it is indicated that he is not married, like all the other cartoon characters, the book (in the letter of Squire Trelawney), on the contrary, mentions the fact that he is married to a black woman.

Almost the entire film is played on Dr. Livesey's face with a wide smile, and almost every phrase is pronounced with a laugh. Only for a moment the smile disappears from his face in the "Spyglass" when Trelawney, in his presence, declares to the approached Silver that they are going to look for treasure. Shortly before this episode, on the way to Bristol, Livesey also does not smile - he sleeps in the stagecoach, however, after the correction of the hat that has moved down to his face, we can again observe his smile, although it is clear that Livesey did not wake up. In the scene of negotiations at the fort with Silver, when Smollett says, “Okay! Sit down, my dear! ”, We also do not see the smile on the doctor's face.
Despite the fact that the book is set in the 18th century, the heroes raise above the Union Jack fort with an Irish oblique cross (St. Patrick's cross) (in short, the flag of Great Britain). It is known that it only became part of the British flag in 1801.

Dr. Livesey's manner of greeting (wide open arms and loud laughter) strongly resembles other cartoon characters of David Cherkassky, such as the tradesman Pakhomov ("What the hell do you want?") And the one-legged pirate nicknamed "One-eyed" ("Doctor Aibolit").

In the book, Jim recognizes the Black Dog in the Spyglass, shouts, and he runs away. In the cartoon, the Black Dog calmly drinks rum with other bums in a tavern, watches Jim's fight with a fat pirate, and then even becomes one of the sailors of the Hispaniola that Silver recruited. Those bandits who attacked the tavern at night, the boy might not have made out in the dark, but he knew this well (besides, the Black Dog in his presence asked Billy Bons about the map)! It is strange that Jim did not raise the alarm on the ship immediately, but only when he heard about Silver's plans. Probably, he suspected something was wrong earlier, but he just didn’t show it.
In the cartoon, Blind Pew is killed by rolling off a cliff in a barrel, while in the book he is trampled by the horses of soldiers who galloped to the Admiral Benbow to help.

The first words spoken by Silver in the "Spyglass" tavern ("I have both") were not voiced by Armen Dzhigarkhanyan.
When watching the video "Ben Gunn's Tale", in the episode when the pirates were looking for a treasure, a birdhouse was visible on one of the trees.
The bearded man, who was firing from the bomb, got hot and collapsed when they decided to cool him. But towards the end of the film, he appeared several times again in the crowd of pirates.

Some characters often change the color of their clothes.

The summary of Stevenson's "Treasure Island" is probably familiar to every person. And it was not at all necessary to read this beautiful work. Both a film and a cartoon have been made based on this book. Although the one who read it from cover to cover did not lose anything, on the contrary, he received great pleasure from this exciting activity. After reading only a summary of Stevenson's "Treasure Island", it is impossible to feel the spirit of romance and adventure, to enjoy the wonderful style that the writer was fluent in.

A few words about the author

Before passing on a summary of the book "Treasure Island" (Stevenson worked on it for several years), I would like to say a few words about the author. He was born in Edinburgh on November 13, 1850. The family was wealthy enough, so the boy received a good education. Biographers say that at the age of three, the future writer became very ill, which made him spend a lot of time in bed. Probably, then he began to invent his first stories in order to somehow amuse himself. But the first book saw the world only in 1866.

It is impossible to say with confidence that the first works of writing brought fame to Stevenson. But the main thing is that the young man did not stop halfway. He travels a lot around his native country and the world, simultaneously publishing his works and arranging his personal life.

Having married Fanny Osborne in May 1880, he adopted her two children as his own. In the future, Fanny's daughter dictated the works of her stepfather, and her son Lloyd became a co-author of many of Robert's works.

History of Treasure Island

Of course, we will tell you a short summary of Treasure Island. Stevenson has long wanted to write a real novel, but no attempt to get started has been successful. Probably, the right moment has not yet come. But then one day, while painting with his stepson, Robert began to paint himself. This is how the map of the island appeared, which he would later describe in the book. The writer began work on it in September 1881. Relatives were the first listeners of the novel, becoming its co-authors. So, the father recommended introducing a barrel of apples and a Billy Bons chest into it.

The first publication was printed in the children's magazine Young Folks, but the public did not like it. But the book, published under the real name of the author, was greeted favorably. Already in 1886 it was translated into many languages, including Russian. As a result, R.L.Stevenson became a classic of fiction. "Treasure Island", a summary of which we will consider later, is recognized as the best example of an adventure novel. And now it is studied according to the school curriculum all over the world.

Plot

Undoubtedly the best novel that Robert Louis Stevenson has ever written is Treasure Island. We will now consider its summary.

The book is set in the eighteenth century. The work begins with a story about the Admiral Benbow tavern, where young Jim Hawkins lives and works. A mysterious stranger, Billy Bones, who is hiding from a sailor with a wooden leg, has come to the institution. But he finds him. and a fight ensues. After the carnage, the wounded Black Dog escapes, and Billy Bones feels terrible. His fears are confirmed: the emissary of the sea robbers brings the black mark. Billy soon dies of a heart attack.

After the death of the guest, Jim and his mother become the owners of a strange package. Forced to flee from the pirates, they hide. The young man shows the package to Squire Trelawney and Dr. Livesey, who find in it a map to the island with Captain Flint's hidden treasure. They equip the ship, take Jim as a cabin boy and go in search. The adventure begins!

The journey continues

We continue to review the summary of Treasure Island. Stevenson, admittedly, did a great job! We cannot convey the intrigue that captures the reader from the first lines. But still he learns that the ship is sailing in search of the treasure. For some reason, Captain Smollett does not like the team, whose members were mostly recommended by John Silver - the one-legged cook.

When the ship was already approaching the coveted island, Jim accidentally overheard the conversation of one-legged John and the sailors. It turns out that these are pirates who also hunt for treasure. They plan to take away the treasures, seize the ship, and kill all unnecessary ones. Warned of the danger, our heroes can adequately prepare for it.

On the island

A very interesting plot was invented by Robert Stevenson! "Treasure Island", a summary of which we continue to retell, does not let the reader go to the last page. Having given the opportunity to Silver to suppress the riot, Smollett invites the sailors to rest on the island, and then return to the ship to continue the journey, Jim, finding himself on the shore with everyone, escapes. On the island, he accidentally finds Ben Gunn - a former companion of the pirates, whom they left three years ago. He is ready to help an honest company in exchange for the fact that they will take him to the mainland.

The gentlemen leave the ship with their supplies. Jim joins the comrades and tells them about Ben. Meanwhile, the pirates are attacking. Jim captures an empty ship, takes him to safety, but he himself is trapped and does not know where his friends have gone. Suddenly, John Silver stands up for the cabin, who managed to get the card. But instead of treasures, the corsairs find an empty pit. Friends beat off Jim, capture Silver, who could not escape, like his comrades, during a shootout. It turns out that the treasure was discovered long ago by Ben Gunn and transferred to his home.

After loading Flint's gold on the ship, the treasure hunters go home, leaving the pirates on the island. Taking advantage of the moment, the one-legged John runs away, taking some of the treasures with him. All other members of the expeditions received their share and returned safely home to England.

What is this book about?

Here is what an interesting novel Stevenson gave the world. "Treasure Island", a very short summary of which we have presented, is a very unusual work. I would like to note that the writer made a revolution by writing a book in a genre that was not previously known. Society at first did not accept him, and then truly appreciated and fell in love. Who among us has not raved about exciting adventures, secrets, the romance of the sea and uninhabited islands? And all this against the backdrop of a dangerous enemy - pirates, thirsty for easy money and do not stop at anything. However, justice has triumphed, good triumphs over evil. The heroes of the novel with Dr. Livesey, Squire Trelawney, Captain Smollett, Jim Hawkins - appear to be very brave, courageous and respectable people. Their enemies are pirates, they are cruel and desperate bastards, but cowards who can leave their comrades in trouble.

Why is it worth reading the work?

The summary of the literary masterpiece, retold by us, of course, is suitable for a reader's diary. But it does not convey the beauty of speech, the lightness of the syllable, the wit of phrases. We have missed many important points and quotes that simply did not fit into the limited scope of our article. But you can fix it. To do this, you just need to pick up this wonderful book.

Instead of an afterword

The book of the classic of world literature will be interesting for both adults and children. After all, the spirit of adventurism has no age. And if you remember that the novel ends with a happy ending, then we can safely say that Stevenson's work promotes positive thinking, teaches us to believe in the best, and liberates imagination. And just because of this, it is worth reading or re-reading "Treasure Island".

For the first time, the world learned about the existence of John Silver (aka Lanky John, aka Hamnk) from the children's magazine "Young Folks", in which from 1881 to 1882 the beginning writer Robert Louis Stevenson, aka Robert Lewis Balfour Stevenson).

In 1883, a separate book was published and, in fact, this year is considered the year of writing. The novel became popular and instantly sold out for quotes.

I see no point in retelling the plot, since everyone has read it. And who has not read, do it at a run ...

I will say a few words about the sequels

In 1973, the novel was published by Ronald Frederick Delderfield / Ronald Frederick Delderfield The Adventures of Ben Gunn describing Ben Gun's life before and after the events of the novel.
We almost immediately began to publish it in parts in the magazine "Around the World".

In 1977, a good sequel was released, which was written by Denis Judd / Dennis Jude The Adventures of Lanky John Silver

A complete description of the life of John Silver, in which the episode on the island takes only a small chapter, is described by Björn Larsson in the novel Lanky John Silver: A True and Gripping Story of My Free Life as a Gentleman of Fortune and an Enemy of Humanity

Old pirate John Silver, already on his deathbed, recalls his bloody past and the treasures of Flint himself, buried on Skeleton Island.

In 2001, Irish writer Frank Delaney (under the pseudonym Francis Bryan) wrote a sequel novel Jim Hawkins and the Curse of Treasure Island

Francis Brian wrote the best sequel to "Treasure Island" - with the same characters, only a little older and older, with the preservation of storylines, with pirates, fights and pursuits, and most importantly, with the preservation of the place of action - the main events of the novel take place all on the same " Treasure Island ". Moreover, the novel is written exactly as Stevenson himself would have written it. He probably would have read it with great pleasure. In any case, the book will give this pleasure to all modern readers.

In 2009, Evgeny Nikanorov released a good sequel called Treasure Island Mystery

In 2010 Edward Chupak John Silver: Return to Treasure Island

The background of your favorite characters - and their new adventures. The truth about who and when buried Captain Flint's piastres on Treasure Island, the path to which is indicated on the Billy Bones map. A delicious pirate flavor, a sharp plot and an unforgettable protagonist - One-legged John Silver, the most famous and charming image of a "gentleman of fortune" in world literature!

From 2010 to 2013, a wonderful graphic novel in 4 parts was published about the further adventures of John Silver, which takes place 20 years after the main events. Screenwriter: Xavier Dorison. Painter: Mathieu Lofrey

In 2013, Russian writer Viutor Tochinov released an investigation novel “ An island without treasures", In which he proves that the apparent plot inconsistencies of the novel turn out to be subtly thought-out plot moves, behind which the real faces of the heroes are hidden. In particular, Jim Hawkins' parents were engaged in smuggling, the proceeds of which were received by Squire Trelawney, Dr. Livesey was a Jacobite spy, pirates on the Hispaniola did not plot a mutiny at all, and so on.

Now we raise the sails and sail towards the cinema.

The idea is loosely coiled by Stevenson.
There will be some spoilers now. The film begins with the fact that absolutely drunk Doctor Livesey cuts off a healthy leg to John Silver, who was wounded in the arm. Jim Hawkins serves as a guard at a prison that contains an old pirate. On the night before the execution, the pirate draws a map of Treasure Island on the floor of the camera and before he can hand it over to Silver, disguised as a monk, he initiates Jim into the secret, forcing the latter to remember the drawing. Jim and Silver, in order to hire a ship, are forced to confide in the secret the aristocrat Evangeline Trelone, who suffers from multiple personality disorder (the second personality is a nymphomaniac killer). Jim from the blow to the head completely forgets the map. On the ship, by the will of fate, there is also a drunken doctor Livesey. The island is inhabited, several Spaniards and wild Ben Gunn, who dreams of a piece of fried meat, live on it. There are still all sorts of adventures, corpses in heaps, Jim dumps one from the island and, subsequently, becomes known under the name Blackbeard.
I like this film.
